This could be a problem of either the compiler or the assembler. I'd need to

If you want to use a newer compiler (you really want a newer compiler if you 
want to use AVX) do this:
% git clone git://code.compeng.uni-frankfurt.de/gcc-build.git
% cd gcc-build
% ./install.sh
